How sweet.I think like it comes naturally with mothers it does with fathers as well.Once you hold your baby and you start to feel more comfortable and you realize you won’t break her you will be fine.My husband was so scared to hold our first child but once the baby got a little bigger he got more comfortable.You’ll be a pro in no time!!!

to hold the baby, make sure you support the baby’s head..
just make sure you dont let them fall!
feed them milk, if not breast milk from the mom, than the powder milk.

Keep them happy…when you hold them make sure your always supporting there heads because they are unable to hold them up by themselves and they tend to throwback when they cry. Also when feeding them always make sure you burp them, this releases and air bubble in there stomach which sometimes calms them down…they wont burp right away so follow a pattern pat there back then rub it gently to it over an over… A bouncer seat is a wonderful thing to have laying around babies love them.

First, let me commend you for wanting to care for your baby. You said you are 16 and your baby’s mother is not your girlfriend. So many young men would shirk their responsibilities based on just ONE of those factors. I advise you to seek out some infant care classes. Check with your local hospitals–infant care is usually offered through their Obstetrics department. The Red Cross also has an excellent first aid program for infants.

Yeah, you probably feel like a fool talking to the baby, but that is what you need to do. Don’t focus on the people around you. Just focus on the baby and talk to him/her. Not goo goo stuff, but hey, what’s up? How’s things? Talk in a soothing voice and just talk about your day if nothing else. They love the sound of voices and the more you talk, the more they will learn your sound. I always talked to my babies like people and am doing the same with my 16 mo granddaughter. Her parents are amazed at how much she understands when I talk.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. None of us knew how until we learned &/or asked.

Hold the baby with just his diaper on against your bare chest. Put him under your shirt or put a blanket over him. Sit in a very comfortable chair or lay in the bed with him this way. Give it plenty of time and just bond with him this way. Find some experienced parents to help advice you on the basic stuff. You’ll figure it out. Cavemen did it, you can do it too.

Always hold the back of the head and give support to the back. Be gentle and carful but sure.
Babies like familiar sounds like the heart beat. Hold the baby close to your chest. Just love him and he will respond. Sit with the baby, make eye contact. for infants sing to him and read to him. Rock him, dance with him, walk around the room with him. Once the baby starts to grow more he will laugh back and play with you. You will have more interaction.
Try not to hold the baby in your arms while he ia sleeping or too much for that matter because he will get used to it and you will have a hard time putting him down to do other things. He will cry the minute you put him down.
Changing:
When changing keep supplies near, on the changing table or bed. If the diaper is “soiled” use the top part that covers the front to scoop the poop off the butt a little. Lift the baby’s butt slightly and close that dirty diaper together. Use wipes to finish cleaning the baby and slide clean diaper under.
Feeding:
Make sure that the milk is not too hot by testing it on the inner part your arm or on the back of your hand. If the bottle is too hot place it in a cup of cold water for a minute or two. If the temp is right, feed the baby and stop after a little bit to burp the baby. Burp by lifting the baby on your shoulder and patting the back.
They don’t come with manuals but everything comes pretty naturally. You can also get a book or rent a tape from the library or video store. Also take a que from mom.

Read every one of the answer’s you got they are all terrific and that get a hold of some books on First Baby, you can get them at your local library, wish i had them when my kids were babies. It really makes my heart swell that you are even asking these questions.Nice Daddy.

dude seriously… just love it… try and get to know it 1st … everything will come natural in due time… I promise once you get to know your kid everything will fall into place… changing diapers sucks… but its not that hard…just hold ya breath… and they want break but still handle them with care…

umm where is the mother?? and why are you being left alone with a baby if you dont know what the hell you are doing… i got a few ideas for you…..
-Take a parenting class (much more likely to help you out, rather then getting answers from people on here!!)
OR…
-Call the public health nurse, she will teach you how to take care of a baby… properly, she will come to your house and show you the proper way to hold a baby!!! (Cradle the baby in your arms with head supported by your elbow… the crease in your arm)
Please go do one of those options immediatly!!

How old is the baby? Small babies need back and neck support. Put baby’s back on arm head near elbow. Makes it easy to hold them and easy for bottle feeding. If you need more tips feel free to IM me. My screen name is crystalrose72083.

Get Dr. Spocks (Seriously) book on raising children, it will tell you much.
You should also not only be talking to your baby all the time, but you should read to it, play music for it, and otherwise engage it in a social aspect. This helps their learning abilities later in life.
As far as holding, as long as you have a good grip on him/her where he/she won’t fall out of your arms, you’re ok. Just make sure you keep it’s head supported at all times because baby’s do not have enough strength in their necks to hold up their heavy little heads.

There’s a great book called “What to Expect: The First Year.” It takes you through the baby’s life a month at a time and it has some great tips.
If you don’t have the baby yet, don’t worry; the nurses at the hospital will help you learn how to hold it, change it, bathe it, etc. They did that for me and even though I was comfortable around babies, it made me feel a lot better.
Babies are pretty sturdy, even though they don’t look it! As long as you are careful with the head and neck, you’ll be fine.
