check out CASA they use volunteers to have with abused kids.
CASA is the only volunteer organization that empowers everyday citizens as appointed members of the court. In an overburdened social welfare system, abused and neglected children often slip through the cracks among hundreds of current cases. CASA volunteers change that. Appointed by judges, CASA volunteers typically handle just one case at a time—and commit to staying on that case until the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. While others may come and go, CASA volunteers provide that one constant that children need in order to thrive.
Are you ready to stand up for a child who needs you? Inquire today about the power you have to change a child's life. Click on "Enter Zip" in the "Act Locally" Box above, enter your zip code and click on the "Search" button.http://www.nationalcasa.org/volunteer/in...

Good for you!! One thing that you could do and maybe even involve your children in is to start a bedtime reading program. Solicit donations from your community for books or stuffed animals or pajamas. Then work with local shelters either homeless or mothers/children or local foster care facilities. You can schedule either weekly or biweekly or monthly readings. Go over near the end of the day with a book or two and your donations in tow. Have the children gather around, even your own children, and read them a night time story. If you have donated goods to pass out to the children have your children help pass them out to the unfortunate children. It is a win win for all of you. The kids you are helping out get to, for a moment, step away from their own lives and find comfort in someone taking time to show them love and care. By having your children involved you give them the most valuable gift of growing up knowing that you care about people and you give what you can to help out others. They will grow following your example! My kids and I started a charity last year to help out foster care children www.sleeptightfoundation.org. I love watching them get involved and it makes us all feel so great and wonderful that we help out these children. I am overwhelmed by the community support I have received to help me with my program. Good luck to you!!

Places like the boys and girls clubs and big brother/big sister are always looking for people to help. You might also try a asking someone at a shelter or a church, they probably know more how you can help.

Big Brothers Big Sisters. It's not for abused or orphaned kids, but it is a costless way of helping out kids who have one parental figure missing.
