How To Stop Kids From Posting Their Homework On Yahoo Answers?
Any ideas, cause this is really hurting the kids. I have myself answered several of their questions while always telling them how to get better at their studies. But now I think its only encouraging them. In the long run, you would agree, this isn’t good for them at all.
I am ok with teaching them concepts and giving them explanations and helping them with learning aids etc. But direct questions right out of the homework isn’t a good thing to be answered really.
Do you have any ideas, real practical ones, to stop this misuse of Yahoo answers?

Basically, what these kids are learning, is how to get anyone else to do their work for them. If the teachers aren’t wise to this system of cheating, then they just let them go on, and probably never notice that the kids with all the As on their homework are failing the tests, because they have to actually do that themselve!
You would think it would show up, eventually, but it doesn’t seem that anyone has noticed except for us.
I agree, totally. One of the things that just kills me is these kids who post the questions, one or two at a time, so they are all spread out, and people come on and answer one or two before they realize what they have done, and quit. But by then the damage has been done, and the kid has the answers to enough…still, they could actually have gotten it done faster, if they had only done it themselves!
Makes me very angry, as a teacher at heart, to see so many kids cheating in such an open manner. I actually had a conversation with one, who asked to have me put up the answer, so they could “check their own against it”, as if I would believe that….they told me they were being honest, and they didn’t want to post the answers, because someone else might cheat off THEM!!! (likely excuse!) Someone else gave them the answers.
THE ONLY THING WE CAN DO IS BAND TOGETHER, AND REPORT THEM FOR CHEATING. IF YOU GUYS ARE GAME, SO AM I.
I hang out more in the Foreign Language category, which is rampant with kids needing others to do their Spanish, French, German and Italian homework for them…But they are a real problem here. One person reporting does nothing…ten of us can get them taken down…at least then, they would have to find some other place, where all the answerers are more innocent.

When I explain something to them, they are learning the information. I don’t respond with direct answers, such as “the answer is a.” I always give them an explanation. As a teacher, isn’t this what we want, for kids to go out and search for answers and learn the information? I will say that when I see a kid post a 10 question quiz type of deal, I don’t answer that, however I will answer 1 or 2 questions in a detailed explanation.

Why worry? If they have learnt their stuff they will be able to answer questions in an exam, unaided; if not …
Most who demand their homework is done for them don’t usually get much help anyway. If you notice the variation in answers, those who do need help need to be on their toes to be able to distinguish the bona fide, from Fido’s bone. Learning to use resources intelligently is a valuable lesson in its own right and YA gives access for people from a wide variety of backgrounds, wh might otherwise not get help.
Those who have the nouse (and charm) to get others to do their work for them that will go far in this life. Now that is real education.

Let them do what they want. Yahoo answers is meant to help people who need help with stuff. So If they need help with homework and they ask someone like their parent or a teacher who doesn’t help them much, why not ask for other peoples opinions and answers. Plus if they are posting in the EDUCATION and REFERENCE: HOMEWORK HELP then Yahoo doesnt think these kids are misuseing it. So just let it go.

First of all, the students have no way of knowing if the answer someone gives them is right or wrong.
Remind the students that Yahoo answers are not allowed on SAT and ACT exams, so they’d better just learn the material.

With the internet, kids are able to basically get a lot of info for next to zero work, be it from this site, google, or wikipedia…
I really don’t have any ideas for stopping this, though, sorry.

Take a phrase out of their homework and put it in your browser, if they have put it on the internet their yahoo answers page would come up so you can punish them and so they will learn not to do it

1. Have all those people who want to show off how “smart” they are quit doing the work for them. Make blatant cheating a violation as well as answering them! It’s particularly upsetting to see those claiming to be TEACHERS giving the answers!
2. Get Y!A off the backs of those of us who try and get the kids to quit abusing Y!A.
3. NO ONE answer multiple listings of science, math, history problems UNLESS it is giving places to find answers (i.e. websites) or explanations on how to solve the problems (WITHOUT giving the answers). However the problem with that is Y!A will uphold a violation of one of these kids complains about not getting the answers they want — see solution #2.
As to the people who say why worry? Well, this is the reason I worry. I’ve seen people up here trying to cheat on everything from pharmacology to auto mechanics — how dangerous is THAT going to be in the future when they start practicing their trades? Also, it encourages an atmosphere and a mind set that cheating is OK.
Edit: To Sue. Love your idea about reporting them for cheating. The only problem is Y!A does not recognize cheating as against community guidelines! I’ve tried. Read them! It doesn’t work.
