I Have To Babysit A Mother Rat And Her Babies. Any Tips On Looking After Newborn Baby Rats And Their Mum?

Posted on June 23rd, 2009 in Articles by Tangkau

my cousin asked me to look after a mother rat and her babies for three weeks. She wants them to survive and she doesn’t want the mum to eat them. Does anyone have any tips on looking after newborn baby rats and their mum???

Keep them in an aquarium for the first 2-3 weeks of their life (how old are they by the way?). At least 10 gallons. Make sure mom has paper towels and/or fleece to make nests and that the litter isn’t wood chips. Yesterday’s News is the best. Make sure the mom is fed a high protein diet (chicken, eggs, rat lab blocks with extra protien.) When the babies open their eyes (around two weeks) they’ll start trying new foods. They’ll need extra protien too. Also make sure to handle them daily to get them used to humans. No mom won’t eat them. Make sure mom gets a break away from the babies evey once in a while. Don’t Touch the babies at all. and If you already have, don’t do it again. Keep the cage away from direct sunlight, breezes, and loud noises. Make sure the mom always has fresh water and food. The babies get all there stuff from their mom so If you take care of her they should survive.
