Is all depend on what paint you using. I wouldnt be worried about the lead, I would be worried about some of the toxics, cleaners, etc.
so w/out knowing what paint you will use, would say... have the boy helping you guys... but the girl better stay with grandma :))

the fumes are not good for the kids or for adults. i suggest that the kids are away while painting and the whole family stay in a motel until smell and fumes are gone....

Well as long as you are not sanding old paint with lead in it that should be ok if you put your baby in a well ventilated area but its going to be a big pain in the butt to try and work with the baby around. Can't you take turns watching her and painting?
I was painting my sons room with green grass at the bottom of the wall and he was walking around naked (three at the time) and he threw his head back to drink out of a soda bottle and threw himself off balance and his whole body landed smack in my tray of green paint. He just froze. I didnt know what to do cause I didnt want to get paint all over but it was tile so I grabbed one leg and one arm and carried him to the tub, lol. So my advice would be to keep them away from the paint.

It depends on the paint. A latex paint, probably safe enough.
Use fans and open windows, outside activity for kids until the smell is lessened.
Water based paints tend to be safer than oil based paints. Read the lables, talk to your paint supplier.

I've been renovating my farm house for the past 14 years..both children were born in that time. They are still happy and grown up now. However, depending on the type of paint (oil or water based), because you might feel a bit dizzy for a while, but nothing serious. We've survived it!
