You might take a cheaper plan that covers over a high deductible. Then you would pay for doctor visits. With kids you never know when you will have an emergency.
You might also try a health program called Healthy Families. It just covers the kids.

keep the insurance
with insurance, you get two things -- 1) the insurance company bargains for you in advance on the prices to be paid for covered procedures. The cash prices are frequently 50% to 6 times higher.
2). insurance is really about the low chance but very high expense risk. Very high in such a case means high enough to bankrupt you if you don't have insurance. Bankrupt means you lose everything except the house and a few possessions and, financially, start over with nothing else. [you do keep the house payments, though]
***
medically, what could happen to one of the kids?
there's a huge list -- hit by a stolen car, virulent infection of unknown variety, cancer, and on and on -- programs like House and ER are full of the many possibilities.

Your overall premium savings isn't as much as you think. That $300 covers the entire family. So you wouldn't be saving $300 a month. You might only be saving $100 -$150 a month.
Dropping the kids is a very bad idea. Say one does get sick and you go to your family doctor. You should expect to pay around $250 and don't forget prescriptions either.
I was playing basketball and severely sprained my ankle and eventually required surgery. That ran over $5000 and that would be the negoiated price between the surgeon/hospital and the insurance company. Oh and you won't have much time to pay that large amount either before they send it to collection and sue you for repayment.

I admit Health insurance is ridiculous these days but you want to keep it for your kids. If something (heaven forbid) where to happen like a car crash then you will be glad you have insurance! That is the point of insurance "just in case". I go to the doctor once a year and I am paying over 200 a month just in case I am in a car crash or get cancer or something.

I suppose it would depend on how much your family gets sick and needs to use the insurance for visits. However for the reason of an emergency it is always a really good idea to have!! ER visits are quit costly. You never know when one of your kids is gonna fall off something and break something or get real sick!

I would say you definatley need to keep their health insurance, incase of an emergency. Then you would owe hospital bills that could be anywhere from 1,000 to 2,000 dollars or higher depending on if theres surgery yada yada yada. Anyways, yes.
