Yes a bedtime routine would be fantastic. If you stick to it every night eventually he will get the idea that the series of events means that it is nearly time for sleep, meaning he will settle to sleep easier because he knows what to expect. It is never too early for a bedtime routine, around 7pm is a good time to have baby in bed, but it is not always possible. Maybe you could stick to what you are doing now and take notice of what time he is actually going to bed for about a week and see if there is a pattern, then decide on a bed time based on that.

As soon as they are born.
I'm one of those hardcore mother's that believes in sleeping and eating schedules and in my home no matter what at 8pm the baby is put to bed and I will not feed or play/hold them until 10pm
this why when they are 1 and 2 they know 8pm is bed time! (this helps stop any fussing)

I regret not starting my sons bedtime routine earlier than I did. I am a first time Mommy and was afraid to put my son down. I didn't begin a routine until he was 6months or so. WAY too late. But we have things going on now (11mo), it took about 3months for the routine to really sink in. It doesnt always go as planned, but mostly works.
