When Can Kids Start Taking Track And Field?

Posted on July 2nd, 2009 in Articles by Tangkau

In grade school years, there’s little league, soccer teams, swim teams, but nothing for track and field. My kids like to run but there is no track and field activities for their age group.

    Look at http://www.usatf.org
There are youth track and field meets for very young people.
If you go to the page for associations and find the one for your area you can get the contact person for youth athletics and find teams to practice with and go to meets.
They run younger than 6 years old.

I remember doing a few track and field camps when I was in elementary school. Try looking at the activities offered by your local park district. You might have more luck in the summer because these types of camps and clubs are usually held outside. Another idea is to look online for local running clubs and coaches.

They will start having track & field events probably in middle school. Many schools also have cross-country running starting in these grades. A school in a suburb or town with a track on campus or access to the high school’s track will probably have both, but smaller, more rural schools may just have cross-country teams. Both are excellent running sports for kids. You may want to check and see where the closest track is to your school, or the middle school your elementary campus feeds into, and try to find out more about what they have to offer. You would most likely be able to go run on the track as a family after school hours, and you could also take the kids to see some track meets to help spark their interest. (The equipment for the field events would not be available without supervision.)
