You can put your baby in the stroller from birth if the stroller is suited for it (read the instructions that come with the stroller). My personal experience with young babies and strollers is that at some point they'll start crying and you'll be carrying your baby and pushing an empty stroller. So, you'll probably be better off carrying baby in a carrier or sling until they're too heavy for you.

What's wrong with laying the baby in the pram and taking a walk?
As long as you're not walking through a minefield there's no reason you can't take the baby out for a walk like that - there's no risk of injury to the neck if he/she is laying down.

I agree with the first poster. As long as it's a stroller that's suitable from birth (the stroller info should say), it's fine. Usually they'll have a reclined position for infants, that's what you'd want to use. We put our son in his stroller for short walks from 5 days old. However, I'll admit that until about 3 months old, I usually used the car seat placed in the stroller (they were compatible) just because the stroller seat seemed so big for him! Plus, that way he was facing me. :)
